Rewe Group’s Billa is Testing iBeacon Technology for Their Stores


Billa Outlets in Austria is starting to trial iBeacon technology. Rewe’s group is testing Apple’s iBeacon in a number of its Austrian supermarkets.  Billa owned Rewe in Austria and  have already installed iBeacon technology for their outlets.

Approximately, there are eleven Billa outlets that are trialling iBeacon technology. The technology is used to send promotions based on customers’ instore location, and can also access and update loyalty card data at the checkout.

Billa is apparently the first Supermarket in Austria to trial iBeacon technology according to Austrian news website heute.at. Volker Hornsteiner, a spokesperson for Billa, said that Rewe will observe how customers react to the new technology to see if a roll-out will prove worthwhile.

iBeacon technology that is installed in Billa will enable smartphones, tablets, and other device to receive notification, offers, and promotion. The iBeacon also makes the payment process easier by allowing customers to pay via their smartphone.
