Earlier this year, The Montana Office of Tourism tapped Publicis Groupe Spark to handle media buying/planning and MercuryCSC on the creative part of the ads. In turn, Spark brought geo-data specialist PlaceIQ to help deliver skiers to the Montana resorts. Dubbed “Montana Moments,” PlaceIQ targeted select ski resorts, the campaign netted a 1.7 times lift in visits by tourists, or 4,752 visitors totaling $6.9 million in revenue — all attributed to the geo-targeted ads.
Montana’s main industries are mining, timber, and farming. But its most dependable business year-round is tourism. Over ten million people a year visit sites like Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, and Yellowstone National Park. But the real money comes from ski resorts. While Yellowstone is an attraction in Montana, most visitors to that park are there for the famous geyser in the Wyoming portion. Montana wanted to be identified as a place for skiers and people who take vacations at resorts and spas.
The Montana Office of Tourism brought in Spark, a Publicis Groupe-owned full-service agency, to handle media buying/planning and MercuryCSC on the creative part of the ads. Spark tapped location analytics provider PlaceIQ to help deliver skiers to the Montana resorts. Dubbed “Montana Moments,” Spark designed the ads for the tourism campaign while PlaceIQ targeted select ski resorts. Users at those resorts saw ads served to their smartphones.
The insights from the campaign have led to a second leg of geo-targeted ads that will run through mid-September.
