Barclays is Leading With iBeacon to Improve in-Branch Accessibility

Barclays, a British multinational banking and financial services company headquartered in London, has proven another action that makes them leading ahead. Barclays Sheffield, as one of Barclays’ branches, now has iBeacon technology to ease their customers enjoying their service. Barclays Sheffield will trial its own Beacon service called Barclays Access, which will notify staff when a customer with an accessibility need enters the branch.

Visitors will be able to opt-in to the service by supplying information about their requirements via an iPhone app without needing to state their requirements when they do some banking interaction. Barclays Access also allows customers to upload a photo, allowing staff to identify them as soon as they enter the premises which makes the customers interact easily with the staff if they find any difficulties.

iBeacon technology uses Bluetooth version 4 or Bluetooth Low Energy to detect when a person who has installed the app enters the building, which then alerts a colleague via an iPad at the front desk. While iBeacon technology will help provide faster and more personal service for customers with accessibility needs, the bank already has some ways to support those without a smartphone. Customers can order high visibility debit cards for easier identification and utilize the bank’s audio-enabled ATMs simply by plugging in their headphones.
